Nestled between the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge mountain ranges, the plateau of Asheville provides urban sophistication laced with small town charm. The downtown Historic District teems with shops, boutiques and restaurants, and other attractions include novelist Thomas Wolfe's boyhood home, the setting for 1929's Look Homeward Angel. The opulent Biltmore Estate, America's largest home, now boasts an award-winning winery. Nearby are opportunities for hiking, biking, rock climbing or white water rafting. Asheville accommodations range from B&Bs and rustic cabins to fine hotels and grand resorts.

The original 18th century settlers of this corner of Appalachia were English, Scottish, Iris, Dutch and German who brought their music and dance traditions, including clogging and bluegrass fiddle for which this area is still famous. Asheville is in the center of a mining area, and offers a number of interesting tours, antique and gem shops, as well as shops with Civil War memorabilia, and historical landmarks are distributed throughout the region.
